In our VisualARQ blog, we usually talk about free-form architectural design with Rhino. What does “free-form” mean to you? Freedom to express yourself? Not sticking to conventions? Letting yourself go with the pleasure of drawing? In that case, believe it or not, you have many things in common with a group with which you may not feel identified: Harley Davidson bikers.
They also love freedom, they show their freedom of expression by customizing their beloved motorcycles, they reveal their unconventionality through their dress code and appearance, and they let themselves be carried along by the route. That’s their world. They ride sitting upright with their hands on the handlebars, touring the world’s roads.
VisualARQ analyzes a Rhino design: Harley Davidson headquarters in Australia. Image: Tony Owen Architects
Harley Davidson is a brand that was born in 1903, more than a century ago, with a long history and many contrasts. In World War II they were military suppliers and, in the 1960s, they became a symbol of the counterculture. Riding a Harley is a lifestyle.
This is the personality that the Australian architect Tony Owen wanted to imprint on the Harley Davidson Australian Headquarters building. An architectural jury awarded this work with the Asia Pacific Property Prize, but only a bike passionate could tell whether the brand spirit has been properly captured or not. Adopt the role you prefer and join us to Sydney.

Conferences: 20th-22nd November 2013
The Department of Architecture of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María will host the XVII Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, SIGraDi, to be held from November 20th to 22nd. SIGraDi organizes one of five international annual conferences on Computer Aided Design (CAD) in Architecture and Design. This year SIGraDi has more than 130 presentations by scholars from Latin America, North America and Europe. The days before the conference, November 18th and 19th, there will be a series of workshops open to academics, students and professionals.
VisualARQ Workshop: From 3D to 2D: Unfolding Architecture (WS4)
This workshop is aimed at students and professionals interested in the production of architectural 3D models in the context of Building Information Modeling (BIM). The goal is to manage form-finding and project deliverables in a fast and effective way by using VisualARQ plugin for Rhino and V-Ray for Rhino rendering engine.
The workshop focuses on Rhinoceros modeling capabilities and its many advantages. It is based on the BIM features added to Rhinoceros, and how we can take advantage from the 3D model for the production of 2D drawings, tables with detailed information of the model, and the management and printing of these documents.
Francesc Salla (VisualARQ product manager) will be available online from AsuniCAD (Spain) to provide support to all attendees.
The Rhino User Meeting Madrid 2013 will take place on 30-31 October at the IE, School of Architecture and Design, in Madrid.
The event will bring together users, professors, students and software developers who will show the latest enhancements related to 3D modeling design techniques, computational design and digital fabrication tools.
User meeting program:
- User meeting: Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 October. 10h to 14h (IE_MM601)
- Workshops: Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 October. 15h to 19.30h (IE_MM-102, MM-202, MM-302, MM-502, MM-601)
